What's the Difference Between a Reel, a Short, and a TikTok, and Do I Need All Three?

They're all short, vertical video formats, and functionally quite similar to one another under the hood. Reels live on Instagram and Facebook, Shorts live on YouTube, and TikToks live on TikTok. The actual video itself can usually be the same across all three with only minor adjustments, so you're not creating three completely different pieces of content from scratch, just distributing one well made video across more places where your customers might see it.

You Don't Need Separate Content for Each

You don't need to be actively posting on all three platforms to benefit from this overlap. Even simply posting the same reel to Instagram and Facebook, and occasionally cross posting to YouTube Shorts, extends the reach of a single piece of content significantly without requiring any extra filming or editing work on your part.

Minor Adjustments That Actually Matter

Small tweaks, like caption tone or whether text overlays are included, can help content feel native to each platform without needing entirely separate versions of the underlying video itself.
